Whilst in the car you should keep you phone secure, and I don’t mean in your hand. In the UK it is illegal to drive whilst using a mobile phone or any device to communicate with unless it is hands-free.  If you are caught using your phone whilst driving there’s a £60 fine and 3 Penalty Points added to your licence! Keeping the phone in a secure place like held on the dash and using a hands-free kit is legal as long as it doesn’t affect your driving take a look HERE for more information on the law in the UK.

Review:

Now the Legal bit is over lets get on with the Review. I have had several Phone holders in the past, ones that stick to the window, ones that clip on the air vents but they have all been cheap and pretty rubbish. I like to have my phone in an area I can see it so I know who’s calling but want it to be secure and not just resting in the drinks holder of the car. The Other Day @mobilefun Tweeted a message saying a blog post of some of the best iPhone Car Holders had been reviewed (you can see the original blog post here). So I decided to check it out as I hadn’t got a holder for my iPhone and really could do with one. After reading the blog post and seeing other reviews and chatting to Andy from the Mobile Fun Forum, I decided that the Brodit Passive Holder was for me!

Brodit Passive iPhone Holder

The Brodit is rather expensive Just under £20 for the holder and just under £15 for the clip to add it to the air vent but I had just hoped it was better than my previous holders that snapped off or just drop the phone. I Ordered the items on Tuesday 28th July at about 3pm and to my total amazement they were with me at 12PM Today! 21 Hours is a pretty good turn around great service from Mobile Fun! I opened the package and took out the Holder and it has a soft feel too it also it is molded perfectly to the iPhone it wasn’t loose at all the holder gripped the phone brilliantly but left all the buttons and dock exposed so that I could have easy access to them! The Brodit feels really sturdy, its plastic, but a strong plastic not your flimsy cheap rubbish. The Holder and Clip feels as it is made to last which is great no more problems, I hope.

The Packaging is plain and simple it’s just see-through plastic and has some black and white instructions. The clip comes separate as you pick the clip for you car model so it is designed to fit perfectly. I personally didn’t find the instructions for the clip great to be honest, the wording was a little confusing and the picture seemed to show the clip being inserted into the vents rather than over the vent and in between the radio and dash. But I managed to figure it out and when it was in place it was going nowhere. You get a little adapter that creates a gap in between the joins of the cars parts (I’m no mechanic), this allows you to insert the clip. Whats great about this way is the clip just wont move its pretty much locked in so it wont fall down. The next step is screwing the holder onto the clip. This bit can be tricky as there is no pilot holes in the clip so that you have the freedom to position the holder but a good bit of pressure and the screws will make a whole in the plastic. This is where you can clearly see the strength of the Brodit. The plastic doesn’t snap at all and when the holder is screwed in place you would think that the Brodit was a permanent feature of your car. I slid the iPhone into place plugged in the charger and went on a little run. I didn’t go far as it has been an awful day today but ill take it on a full long drive soon and update this post if I have any problems.

Ive listed the pros and cons to the Brodit below and hope you find them useful:

Pros:

  • Very well made strong plastic built to last.
  • Moulded perfectly for the iPhone 3G/3GS (other sizes available from Mobile Fun)
  • Has a Soft yet firm grip on the iPhone so no scratches but it is impossible to slip out.
  • Can tilt in Multiple Directions to give you the best viewing.
  • You can use the phone easily in the holder as it holds it in a firm place.
  • All buttons and dock can be accessed, there’s no covering of any buttons.
  • Can be added to the dash by screwing, no screws with a pro clip or Window with a suction mount (all available from Mobile Fun)
  • 3 models, Passive (exposed dock connector – the one i got) Active ( Holder with Charging Lead always connected) and Passive with Dock Dock phone sits in a dock which then can have FM transmitter charger etc plugged in.

Cons:

  • Rather Expensive compared with other mounts but you can see why with the quality.
  • Not easily removable if using the Proclip and holder as it is in tight. So if you have multiple cars and want to move it around get the Window Suction.
  • Can’t be used with a skin. The holder is accurately moulded for the iPhone and therefore doesn’t allow a skin.

Overall:

The Brodit iPhone 3G/3GS holder and Proclip is brilliant. It’s sturdy yet elegant design will keep your iPhone safe and secure whilst driving. If you are after a car holder for you phone then look no further. Also I really recommend Mobile Fun for UK customers (no I don’t work for them or get commission). They sent the items out really quick, I have used them many times in the past and never had a problem. The forum although quiet has a great member of the Mobile Fun team (Andy) on hand to answer any queries you have too! Also check out all the other accessories for you phone not only iPhones!
