Today UK Retailer GAME, has gone into administration following poor sales and lack of funds. Founded in 1991, GAME was on pretty much every high-street in the UK known as the number 1 resource for the latest games on every platform. GAME also took over Gamestation, it’s main high street competitor and opened Gameplay online. However the once number 1 supplier has faced difficulties against online competition from the likes of Amazon and Steam.
GAME have been having trouble acquiring games and had to cancel pre-orders of Mass Effect 3 as the publishers refused to supply GAME due to concerns with it’s creditworthiness. Well it seems now that GAME has had to go into administration following other giants including Woolworths.
“Further to this morning’s announcement of the suspension of trading in shares of GAME Group plc, the board has concluded that its discussions with all stakeholders and other parties have not made sufficient progress in the time available to offer a realistic prospect for a solvent solution for the business. The board has therefore today filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator. In the short term the Board’s intention is that the business will continue to trade and discussions with lenders and third parties will continue under the protection of the interim moratorium.”
GAME was one place I always loved as a kid. Going in with my Dad, picking up the latest Warcraft game and heading home for a night of killing Orcs. Not seeing a GAME or Gamestation in the High Street would be such a shame and is another step forward of the UK being made of Warehouses and Fast food chains. It’s a sad day.
