Yesterday was the opening day of the Euro Gamer Expo 2009 in Leeds. Over 2000 gamers entered the exhibition all hungry for a go at the latest and upcoming games.
With games including MAG, Assassins Creed 2, Split Second, Halo 3, God of War 2 and many more the venue was packed with gamers trying to grab a 20 minute play.
I went with a good friend of mine, travelled the 120 mile trip to Leeds for the 11am start. We arrived at around 10:30 and the queue was already huge! After finally gaining entrance we headed into the exhibition which was already packed, but managed to grab a PS3 linked to a 46inch Sony TV playing Uncharted 2 Single Player. Not yet having played this game it was good to see how the single player side was just a vibrant and exciting as the 1st game. With only 4 machines playing each game it was a little tricky to get a go on anything and you had to be quick when waiting otherwise someone else would just pinch the game before you! My friend managed to grab a go on MAG. I say a go, when in fact he sat there for 30mins waiting for it to let him join a server. However after a further 10 mins he gave up and the Expo Staff had removed MAG from the original 8 machines due to problems connecting! Luckily for my friend and I we both have BETA keys to play this anyway at home.
While he was attempting to get a go on MAG, I wandered off and spotted the racer, Split Second by BlackRock Studios which is due out in Q1 of 2010. The game was possibly one of the best racers I have played with the options of blowing up the track and causing vast environment effects against yourself and other players. I got the chance to film some of this and you can see it above or in HD on the Cloud Bite You Tube Channel.
After playing some other games and getting a look at Assassins Creed 2, (sadly the queue was just too long to get a go), we crossed over the road and had a look at the Careers fare. Any budding Games Designer should be there and it was great for my friend who had a chat to the developers Team 17 about there latest game and how best to get into the games industry.
We both had a chat to a guy from Nvidia who were there showing off their fantastic 3D Glasses. These are amazing and if you ever get the chance to try them out then do so. I always felt it was a bit of a gimmick when Nvidia launched this but seeing Need for Speed Shift and Batman Arkham Asylum in stunning 3D was an amazing experience and something I’ll definitely think about when next upgrading my PC!
Overall the day was Ok, we got to see some great games it’s just a shame due to the sheer number of people and so few consoles it was difficult to get a go on anything. Check out the Split Second Video the game looks great, and if your heading to the London Expo this weekend then you will get the chance to meet even more developers and play more games… Lucky you!
